Dear Neuroticism,

I have a few choice words for you.  The first being you suck! Yeah, I said it. YOU SUCK!

Sorry to be so blunt but really, no one thinks you’re that great.  You’re moody, you worry all the time and your jealous behaviour is off the chart.  Perhaps if you were nicer, people would want you in their lives but alas, you don’t know how to respond to stress so you end up giving everyone anxiety.

You try to hide behind your ‘shyness’ and make people think that you’re just a sweet innocent kid.  I see through your little façade. 

You’re paranoid and you take things too personally Neuro…yes, I’m talking about you.  You make things all about you, well I’m here to tell you stop being a drama queen.  Maybe if you would communicate more you wouldn’t be so angry. I’m just saying.

Because of you, people are taking meds and believing that you’re gone.  Little do they know you’re still lurking in the corners of their mind and now they have to deal with questionable side effects (like jitters, tingling in the face, leg or ass and/or loss of all five senses).  Then you have the nerve to come back and get angry because you now have new issues to deal with or it makes you depressed about why they took the meds in the first place. 

I’m here to tell you NEUROTICISM, (if that is in fact your real name)…you need to get gone!  People need to be free from your sleeper hold. I’m here to keep it real and tell you one thing…

It’s ok…it’s ok….it’s ok…it’s ok….It’s ok…it’s ok….it’s ok…it’s ok…It’s ok…it’s ok….it’s ok…it’s ok…It’s ok…it’s ok….it’s ok…it’s ok.  (at some point this will break you down and make you change your ways…it worked in the movie ‘Good Will Hunting‘ so I thought I’d give it a try – anything? no?)

Ok. I didn’t want to do this but I’m taking it up a notch.  I want you to cease and desist from tormenting people’s lives and let them enjoy themselves.  Stop being a mental and emotional burden in the hearts and minds of millions.  You need to de-stress, relax and meditate.

Stop internalizing everything.  You need to shape up or ship out!

My letter was directed to the personality trait neuroticism as it is the base of mental health illnesses – a very serious matter.  People need to know they’re not alone.  Everything from depression, gambling, PMS, bi-polar disorder, drug addition, alcoholism, bullying, ADHD, Alzheimer’s and so much more fall under this category. 

As there is no ‘Life Training Guide’, we end up creating our own unwritten manual based on our personal morals, values and experiences as the foundation.  We proceed to share this knowledge with the next generation.  With that said, the one thing we need to practice and encourage is open communication in all matters.  Bringing awareness to issues by sharing our thoughts and emotions is the only way we can get to the bottom of mental health illnesses

To anyone affected by any type of mental illness (directly or indirectly), please know that you’re not alone in anything you endure.  History repeats itself so if you or a friend experience a difficult time, chances are others have experienced it too.  It may be a difficult road ahead but you don’t have to travel it on your own.  I’ve been blessed with faith in God which has carried me through a lot of tough times in life.  I’m not here to preach or tell you to believe – just know that you’re not alone and the power of positive thinking is real.

Each One teach One’ is a great motto – let’s share and learn from each other and inspire one another for greatness!
