Side Effects

If you’re anything like me then you hate taking medication.

Our bodies are amazing machines. It was designed to heal itself in almost any situation.  However, I believe the body wasn’t created to endure what we put it through on a regular basis.  Most diseases are preventable. From diabetes to some cancers, they can be prevented. Our environment plays a part in our overall health but it’s also what we consume that is a contributing factor to illnesses.

I stopped drinking sodas and carbonated drinks a few years ago. In the first month alone, I lost 15lbs without changing anything else. I’ve since attempted to drink coke and unless there is rum in it, I can’t do it. One time, after consuming half a glass of Coca-Cola, I experienced intense stomach pains for three days. I’ve recently cut out juices, with the exception of a glass of something now and again.

The real reason I’m here is to talk about the side effects of today’s medication. Medication that is supposed to heal you or help you.  I know it’s not funny, but some of these commercials really make me laugh.

I’m not naming names but there’s a medication that is supposed to relieve people of an ailment (I’ve yet to pronounce). Some of the side effects include, rash, headaches and possible thoughts of suicide…what? And the commercial states, if any of these symptoms occur, seek medical attention. When, after you’ve gobbled down the pills to do away with yourself? Only to realize, ‘I think it was my medication that put thoughts of suicide in my mind’.

A few years ago I was prescribed pain killers for a serious back issue and I really wish I kept the entire list of possible side effects.  What it did included was;

  • Increased Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Dry Mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Tiredness
  • Insomnia
  • Weight Loss
Or possible, more severe sides effects include;
  • Black tarry stools; or loose stool resembling coffee grounds
  • Fainting
  • Fast or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Unusual Bleeding or Bruising
  • Hallucinations
  • Memory Loss
  • Exaggerated Reflexes
  • Extreme Aggression
  • Decreased Bladder Control
  • Numbness in the lips, cheeks or face; legs, arms, or other limbs (what other limbs people!)

This was all to help my back feel better?  Needless to say, I took it once and after feeling like an addict, I opted to deal with the pain.

The pain had to be better than thinking I was being chased by the Elmo through the forest of feelings and jumping on a unicorn to make my get away from the fury bastard and his army of muppets all waving sabre swords made of cotton candy.  Not cool!

Say no to drugs kids!

There’s a new movie to be released on February 8th entitled “Side Effects”. It’s about a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist – intended to treat anxiety – has unexpected side effects.  Ladies, Channing Tatum is in it – whose with me?
